Can You Swim Your Way to a Stronger Spine?

Summer is right around the corner and despite the unusually wet weather we have had during May, the sun is on it’s way ensuring more time spent outside. This includes taking your workouts outside as well! Though this fills me with excitement, I also understand the fear of the impact aerobics such as jogging and biking have on your spine. Well, we have found your solution: swim! Not only is swimming a healthy workout, but is one of the most beneficial activities for your back and spine.

Swimming as a Natural Form of Rehabilitation

According to the American Chiropractic Association, research now points to more natural and cost-effective forms of treatment before painkillers and surgery. At HealthFirst, we believe that treating your problem at its source leads to better health. Swimming can act as a natural rehabilitation method for those with lower back pain.

Swimming is a low impact exercise, meaning because the water is buoyant, there is very little stress on your joints. I heard it referred to as “active stretching” which I think is a perfect description. While you swim, you use your entire body and a full range of motion. This allows you to strengthen your core and back muscles which support your spine. Also for those looking to lose some weight, swimming is a great start. The water reduces the feeling of “heaviness” you may feel while jogging or during other aerobic activity.

How You Can Start

Even if you do not have access to a pool at home, there are plenty of places to swim around the city- whether it be in Barton Springs or the gym pool. However, before starting a swimming regime we recommend consulting your doctor or trainer to create the best plan for you. In addition, there are various events and classes to improve your swimming skills. The Austin Aquatics and Sports Association may be a great place to start.
